May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month!
Celebrate by organizing a walking club to get students (and staff) to make walking part of their daily routine. Walking is a great form of exercise and you can fit it in whenever and wherever it works! Adding some “chill out” time to walk with friends, hiking with your family or competing in some walk relays might be just the thing to help take time out to recharge and have fun. Remember, small steps make a big difference!
To make your program a success, recruit some help! Everyone can:
• Help select locations and times for kicking off the walking club
• Create flyers and announcements to promote the activity
• Solicit community donations
• Encourage their friends and classmates to be physically active on a regular basis
• Find walking areas in and around the school and arrange appropriate routes, any supervision (if necessary), and a plan for rainy days—create at least one in-school walking route.
• Invite the school principal, a teacher, parent, community leaders or other adults to lead a walk once a week. When adults model good physical activity habits, students may be more likely to catch on and follow their lead.

Fuel Up to Play 60 in Action – Does your Cafeteria Need a Facelift?
Providing an inviting cafeteria environment makes adopting healthy habits fun and exciting for students. That’s why Trish Molloy, Operations Manager of Nutrition Services for seventeen schools in West Hartford, CT, decided to use Fuel Up to Play 60 funds for a cafeteria makeover at Charter Oak Elementary.
The cafeteria was painted with murals depicting healthy foods and kids enjoying outdoor physical activities. The town’s maintenance department contributed to the remodel by painting the walls, ceilings, and support structures in the dining room and serving area, and a local artist was contracted to paint the colorful murals. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization also got involved by helping to provide food for adult visitors during the grand opening breakfast.
If you did a cafeteria makeover, what pictures would you paint on the wall?

Fuel Up to Play 60 Grants – What Kind of Wellness Activities Get Funded?
The first step in applying for Fuel Up to Play 60 funding is to complete the School Wellness Investigation (SWI). The SWI helps you collect information about the current nutrition and physical activity environment in your school. You can fill out a wellness investigation easily by logging in to your dashboard. Once you’ve identified areas to improve using the SWI, you and your student leaders can select “plays” (programs) from the Playbook that will help address your school’s weaknesses. For example, if your school has an underutilized breakfast program, you may choose to work with your food service director to implement the Grab-n-Go Breakfast Play to make breakfast more convenient and appealing to students.
The Fuel Up to Play 60 Playbook consists of over 60 programs for healthy eating and physical activity. Some of the easiest physical activity “plays” to implement are, before/after school walking club or open gym mornings. Healthy eating plays are a great way to introduce new menu options or opportunities for students to make healthy choices. The key is to work closely with the School Nutrition Department. Taste Test Days pair up well with the Salad Bar Tryouts and Menu Makeover activities for middle and high school students. For elementary schools, consider planning one healthy eating event per month such as A Hero’s Breakfast, How Many Can You…?, Recipe Contest, Taste (Test) a Rainbow.
For more information and creative ideas for using Fuel Up to Play 60 funds to make a difference in your school, visit the funding section of the Fuel Up to Play 60 website.
The next funding deadline is June 15th so be sure to get started on your application today!

Fuel Up Like a Pro
All the students at your school may not play football, but they can take a lesson from NFL players, who work hard all year to stay at the top of their game. These professional athletes know that eating the right foods everyday is important to make sure their bodies are functioning at their peak performance—both physically and mentally.
Fuel Up to Play 60 encourages students and staff to fuel up like a pro with more nutrient-rich foods including low-fat and fat-free dairy, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables so they can be active for at least 60 minutes each day. Encourage students to record their healthy eating and physical activity habits using the Fuel Up to Play 60 online or paper tracker. By keeping track of what they eat and making their own personal goals for improvement, students will soon be fueling up just like their favorite athletes!
Try these nutrient-rich ideas to help get started:
- low-fat or fat-free plain or flavored milk with a piece of fresh fruit
- low-fat or fat-free yogurt topped with fresh fruit and whole grain cereal
- fresh vegetables with hummus
- low-fat or fat-free cheese with an apple
- whole wheat English muffin topped with marinara sauce, melted low-fat or fat-free mozzarella cheese, and fresh vegetables
Click here to learn more about what these foods can do for you.
How do you fuel up like a pro? Share your favorite recipes or discuss ways that you’ve changed the school environment to promote or increase access to nutrient-rich foods.

How to Build a Winning FUTP60 Team
In the NFL, the quarterback is a leader and a crucial component of the team. However, if he was the only one on the field there would be no one to pass or hand-off the ball to and no matter how good he was the chances of him scoring a touchdown by himself would be very minimal.
Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisors serve as quarterbacks for their school team. They help with challenges, call “plays,” and receive important information from the Fuel Up to Play 60 message center. But just like a football quarterback, they can’t do it all by themselves. It takes an entire team to make the changes necessary for a healthier generation.
The Fuel Up to Play 60 “Who Can Help and How” and “Teambuilding Tips” resources can help Program Advisors recruit new team members and offers suggestions on how to utilize them as important players. Specific direction for students, nurses, principals, community members and more are provided to help Program Advisors create a winning team. Visit the website and start building your team today!

Program advisors needed in every school
Does your school have a Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor yet? You should! Only schools with one or more Program Advisors can apply for funding and earn many of the program rewards.
Sometimes Fuel Up to Play program supporters are reluctant to “step up” and be Program Advisors because they are worried that the time commitment will be too great. However, there is no reason you have to go it alone. Any adult enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60 can sign up to be a Program Advisor, and schools can have more than one.
Select staff, including school nurses, PE teachers, cafeteria managers, health teachers and student leadership group advisors, can work together as Program Advisors to help engage and empower students to implement Fuel Up to Play 60. Divide up responsibilities according to expertise: one advisor can help students complete the School Wellness Investigation, while another coordinates healthy eating plays, and a third oversees physical activity strategies from the Playbook.
The more people involved, the more successful your program can be! Make sure your school isn’t missing out on great opportunities and rewards just because no one steps up as Program Advisor. Sign yourself up today by logging in to your dashboard and recruit others to help you implement Fuel Up to Play 60!

Fuel Up to Play 60 in Action – Taste Test Days at Weston High School, Connecticut
Jill Patterson, resident dietitian for Chartwells School Dining Services in Newton and Weston, Connecticut, is using Fuel Up to Play 60 to introduce new foods to students. Jill worked with her school wellness team and administration to host taste test days at Weston High School and featured the four Food Groups to Encourage.
There was a low-fat and fat-free yogurt station with Greek, organic, and fiber-added yogurts. The fruit station included mango prepared in three different ways – fresh, pureed, and salsa-style. Whole grains were used as serving vehicles for the mango. Whole grain French toast sticks went with the mango sauce and whole grain corn chips complimented the mango salsa. Heirloom tomatoes and herb salad were available at the vegetable tasting station and an additional whole grain station featured quinoa salad.
Jill also created nutritional signs to place at each station. These signs were used to educate students about the health benefits of the featured food. Students were very excited to try the new foods and some of the items will be incorporated into future lunch menus.

Existing student groups such as the student council, gifted and talent classes, or after-school club members can make up a student team.
